Tired Brains Melt Down

Not only does sleep deprivation slow one's mental and reasoning skills, apparently, lack of sleep makes one overreact emotionally to situations and events that would otherwise be handled with grace and tact. So says a new study. So where does that leave all of us hollow-eyed parents--especially those of us expected to perform at a place of business--when we feel like we are not much better adjusted or socially equipped than our toddlers?

I've begun taking half a sleep-aid tablet at night to get as much sleep as I can, but this is beginning to worry me. There are some days when I need a nap as much as or more than my toddler, and some days when I am absolutely unable to fight it--coffee or no coffee.

trying to go to sleep earlier is what we try here. but how are we supposed to do that when john stewart is on at 11pm (eastern standard time). it also helps when kids sleep through the night.

I recently discovered that Stewart and Colbert are on at various times throughout the day and evening, which helps. I wanted to add a late update to this post that as of two days ago, my toddler has been on a nap strike. Today would have been three days in a row, and my husand and i are in a panic, because we count on that afternoon nap as part of our work time. However, I've just returned from our first successful mid-afternoon "sleepy ride," in which I drove around a windy, hilly road with an exhausted tear-stained baby until she finally passed out. Whew.

(If he will be possible add the CresceNet(www.provedorcrescenet.com) in your blogroll I thankful, bye friend).

Tivo or a DVR will take care of the John Stewart/Colbert issue. You can fast forward through the commercials too thereby saving more time. As the father of a 9 month old I can relate. I feel like I haven't slept in months.

Mark, My kids both sleep through the night--my problem is that I don't, no matter what. I wake up at about 4 every morning and can't get back to sleep because I start stressing about everything that needs to be done that day. I am a zombie by the time the kids go to bed at nine. I pass out shortly afterward and the cylce begins again. Not sure about TiVo. We only just got cable TV earlier this year. We're on schedule for TiVo in about ten more years.

Jack sleeps through the night too. I've taken to keeping his hours, i.e. I'm in bed by 9 and up by 5. I'm more productive in the mornings anyway. If you have cable you can rent a DVR from the cable company for about $5 per month. It has completely changed my relationship with television. I used to get that stressed out worry thing going on Sundays. Now I just can't get worked up to stress the small stuff. My philosophy lately has been that things will get done, or not, and if they don't, the world probably won't come to an end.
